1. Second step
IAET has decided to join for the second time consecutively in the IREC competition and the first annual Spaceport America Cup with KEMET 2 in collaboration with the military technical college (MTC) to be the only Egyption and Arabian representative in the biggest rocket rally in the world in New Mexico (NM) in the US.
2. The mission
Our mission was to proof that we can build and fly an international standard rocket despite what we might be facing in Egypt from lack of resources and raw materials and compete with global academies and educational institutions and achieve even more advanced ranks than KEMET 1 . In IREC 2017 we had a vision of our plan started with registration in 10k ft. COTS ( commercial of the shelf) category and from there we go to the first step DESIGN.
3. Put into action
Of course we had some problems from the beginning of the project especially on how to select our best rocket configuration with considering some limitation like rocket’s objective, weight, thrust & altitude in which points are calculated for but our big concern was choosing durable, light weight and stiff material that can sustain the rocket shape and keep it’s performance during flight and landing and that was the problem with KEMET 1 and since carbon fiber is banned in Egypt we have chosen FIBER GLASS. We started scouting for reliable working hands to get the best design implementation.
4. Yes we can
KEMET 2 had the spots on it back there in las cruces convention center (NM) in the rehearsal day for two points.
1. The material chosen for the rocket structure was surprise for the judging team and the audience because most of them use carbon fiber
2. The smoothness and perfection of how the nose cone is made because most of the teams put an aluminum end tip as it is difficult to be machined with perfection but we came up with a special technique for the production.
5. The Last Launch
In the middle of no where, a remote desert named by white sands was the launching site where our rockets limit is the space we had to travel for about 2 hours while fasting to reach our camp in temperature of +45 degree Celsius and start preparing our rocket. One day to show your rocket is valid to fly by having a flight card based on some points that should meet the referees and competition safety rules and two days for setting up your last touches for flight and make it fly. Unfortunately, we missed the first day chance and didn’t bring all rocket parts and on the second day rockets starts to fly but we still had some comments on some technical parts the judges needed to make sure we have it so we started searching and asking for it from other rocketeers, thanks to allah we found them but the day is finished and no hope to make it. On the third day we just finished our rocket assembly by the noon and before they announce the last call for the last launch we got the flight card and was ready to launch it. The team splitted some on the launch site to setup the rocket on the launch rail and some on the firing site.
Every body is anxious awaits for the firing count down..time runs slowly, adrenaline flows quickly and heart beats raises….3…2..1. Ignition is on KEMET 2 flys up straight in the sky and returns back safely to ground. The priceless moments and emotions are like sculpture in everyones life thanking allah for crowning our work and non-sleeping nights with this historic moment, achieving our mission and to be ranked 11th in the world.
6. Thanks To…
Thanks for the board of directors in IAET and MTC for letting us express our capability and how we can handle problems and pressure and special thanks for Dr. Najwa for being supportive for the team along this journey at all levels.
